Medicine, Dentistry and Veterinary Medicine Applications: A September Checklist for 2027 Entry

For most applicants to Medicine, Dentistry and Veterinary Medicine or Science for 2027 entry, the key UCAS deadline is 18:00 UK time on 15 October 2026. A complete application—including the reference—must reach UCAS by then to guarantee equal consideration. Because schools and colleges often impose an earlier internal deadline, September should be used for evidence-based course choices, a final personal statement, reference coordination and careful checking rather than last-minute rewriting.

Completed 2027 applications have been able to be submitted since 1 September 2026. That does not mean an applicant should send an untested application immediately, nor wait until the final afternoon. The right goal is a complete, accurate application built around the requirements of the specific courses selected.

Confirm the deadline that actually applies

UCAS lists 15 October 2026 at 18:00 UK time as the equal-consideration deadline for the universities of Oxford and Cambridge and for most courses in Medicine, Dentistry and Veterinary Medicine or Science. Read the current UCAS dates and deadlines and then verify the deadline on every course page, because “most courses” is not the same as every possible route.

Ask the school or college for its internal deadline now. The centre needs time to review the application, add predicted grades where applicable and complete the reference before sending it to UCAS. An internal date in September is not an alternative UCAS rule; it is the practical cut-off that allows the centre to meet the official deadline.

Build a shortlist from published requirements, not reputation alone

UCAS allows applicants to make up to five choices in total, but only a maximum of four courses in any one of Medicine, Dentistry, Veterinary Medicine or Veterinary Science. A fifth choice may be a different subject. Before deciding how to use it, check whether that course will consider an application whose personal statement is directed mainly at a clinical or veterinary profession.

Create a comparison sheet for each proposed course. Record the required A-level or equivalent subjects and grades, GCSE requirements, admissions test, resit policy, work-experience expectations, contextual or widening-participation criteria, interview method and any restrictions on deferred entry. Requirements vary substantially, so a strong application is one that is eligible before it is ambitious.

Use the current profession-specific sources

Medicine applicants can use the Medical Schools Council’s 2027 entry-requirements tool as a structured starting point, then confirm every detail on the university’s own course page. Dentistry applicants should consult the Dental Schools Council’s 2027 entry-requirements resource. Veterinary applicants can compare the Veterinary Schools Council’s current entry-requirements guidance and the relevant veterinary-school pages.

Do not transfer one university’s policy to another. A school may use GCSEs, predicted grades, an admissions test, contextual information, the personal statement or interview in different ways. Historic cut-offs can provide context but are not promises for the 2027 cycle.

Use UCAT results strategically, without inventing a universal cut-off

For applicants to relevant Medicine and Dentistry courses at UCAT Consortium universities, UCAT 2026 is the test cycle for 2027 entry. The official UCAT test dates show a booking deadline of 15:00 UK time on 16 September 2026 and a final test day of 24 September 2026. Anyone who has not booked should act through the official process rather than assume an exception will be made.

Candidates receive their result before the UCAS deadline. The UCAT Consortium explains that results should inform university choices and are then delivered directly to chosen UK universities in early November. Read the official UCAT results guidance and each university’s current selection policy. There is no single UCAT score that guarantees an interview across all medical or dental schools.

Students who are still preparing for the test can use CoPhil’s separate guide on when to start UCAT preparation. This application checklist answers a later question: how to turn the final evidence—including the score—into defensible course choices.

Write the three personal-statement answers as one coherent case

For 2026 entry onwards, UCAS replaced the single continuous personal statement with three questions: why the applicant wants to study the course; how qualifications and studies have prepared them; and what they have done outside formal education that is useful. The overall limit remains 4,000 characters. Use the official UCAS personal-statement guidance rather than an old template written for the previous format.

The three answers should not repeat the same motivation in different words. The first can explain informed interest in the profession and course. The second should connect relevant study to the intellectual demands of the degree. The third should reflect on experience beyond lessons—such as work experience, caring, volunteering, employment, reading or a sustained activity—only where it genuinely developed relevant understanding or qualities.

Reflection matters more than assembling an impressive-sounding list. Explain what was observed, what the applicant learned, how their thinking changed and why the experience is relevant. Do not exaggerate responsibility, invent contact with patients or animals, or imply that watching a professional is the same as performing clinical work.

Coordinate the reference and check every factual field

Give the referee enough time and useful context. The applicant should provide their intended courses, relevant achievements, circumstances already disclosed through the proper school process, and the internal deadline. The referee writes independently; the student should not draft or edit the reference on the referee’s behalf.

Before submission, check legal name and contact details, qualifications and grades, pending results, course and institution codes, fee-status information where relevant, and the chosen start year. Make sure the application is internally consistent: course choices, personal-statement evidence and reference should describe the same applicant, not three disconnected versions.

A workable September timetable

By 11 September: establish eligibility

Reduce the longlist to courses for which the applicant meets the published academic and non-academic requirements. Record uncertainties and ask the university admissions team rather than relying on an online forum.

By 18 September: draft and test the application

Complete the three personal-statement answers, request targeted feedback and confirm that the referee has what they need. UCAT candidates who have not yet tested should also protect preparation time without allowing the statement to consume every evening.

By 25 September: use the final evidence

Update the comparison sheet with the UCAT result where relevant, re-check current university selection policies and settle the four profession-specific choices. Confirm the fifth-choice strategy rather than adding a course simply because a space is available.

Before the centre’s deadline: complete a line-by-line check

Read the whole application once for accuracy and once for clarity. Confirm that each course still has the expected 15 October deadline and that the centre can send the completed application with its reference in time. Keep a copy of the final information submitted.

How parents can help without taking ownership

Parents can help maintain a deadline calendar, encourage the applicant to compare requirements carefully and ask whether every choice has a clear rationale. They should avoid rewriting the personal statement into an adult voice or choosing universities solely by league-table position. The applicant must be able to discuss their own motivations, experiences and judgement confidently at interview.

When specialist guidance may be useful

Structured support can help when the applicant has several plausible choices but cannot interpret differing selection policies, is struggling to turn experiences into reflection, or needs a realistic plan that protects A-level study alongside admissions work. Good guidance should improve the applicant’s decision-making and authentic expression, not manufacture claims or promise an offer.

CoPhil’s Specialist Pathway programmes support aspiring medics, dentists and vets with application guidance, academic mentoring and interview preparation. Families can book a free 15-minute consultation to discuss the applicant’s current position and the most urgent next step.

The priority now

For 2027 entry, September is the month to convert preparation into a defensible application. Confirm the 15 October deadline, work to the earlier school or college date, choose courses from current published requirements, use UCAT results in context, complete the three UCAS statement answers and leave time for the reference and factual checks. An early application is not automatically a stronger application; an accurate, eligible and coherent one is.
